Insight into rosacea treatment
Rosacea is a common dermatological condition that affects adults. Although this condition has been found in most races, it mainly affects Caucasians and especially women. This condition is manifested in stages ranging from mild, moderate then to severe depending on the individual. Since it is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition, if not treated in good time it becomes progressive over time. The symptoms of rosacea vary according to the severity but it normally manifests itself through redness on the face which is due to the rapture of tiny blood vessels in the skin. Then some small red pimples which become large pus filled bumps. In most people the symptoms can flare up for about two or three weeks then completely disappear.
There is no known cure for rosacea but treatment therapy that is tailored to the specific type of condition and individual that is affected can effectively control it. It is however important to start the treatment early enough before it progresses. Severe type rosacea may also cause inflammation to the eyes and eyelids. There are various rosacea treatments that work well in relieving the symptoms some of the most common are;
Oral antibiotics
These antibiotics are normally prescribed to those whose condition is moderate. Amoxicillin and minocyline are some of the many antibiotics that work well to reduce the inflammation and the pimples on the face. Doctors may start you on a high dose and then reduce it as the treatment progresses. The key to great results especially when using antibiotics is following the right dosage and the time frame. It is also important to understand the possible side effects and potential risks before you start taking the antibiotics.
Topical cream
This is the most popular treatment. It has been shown that topical skin medication controls the skin condition especially if it is mild. The popularity of this mode of treatment is high because there is low risk of any serious side effects or drug irritations. This rosacea treatment is also easy to administer since the cream is applied twice a day on the affected area. The cream can be used independently or in a combination of other treatment such as oral antibiotics. However the topical cream treatment should only be withdrawn if it causes undesired reactions to the patient or if the patient has recovered completely.
Isotritenoin
This is an oral medication that is prescribed to the severe cases of inflammatory rosacea. It is a powerful medication and is used if the other modes of treatment have failed to improve the symptoms. This medication is usually preferred in cystic acne since it inhibits the production of oil in the sebaceous glands. Close monitoring however should be done by a physician so as to monitor the body’s reaction to the medication.
Skin cleansers
Harsh soaps or highly acidic lotions should be avoided even if you have started on other rosacea treatments. Over the counter skin cleansers for sensitive skin offer relief to the symptoms while at the same time soothing the skin. One should also avoid exposing the skin to harsh conditions such as too much sun or wind.
