Natural and Commercial Remedies for Rosacea

When suffering from rosacea, red bumps or pimples appear on the forehead, cheeks and nose. In certain cases, tiny broken vessels may also appear on the nose. Such skin problem usually affects individuals with fair skin and those aged between 30 and 60 years old. Unless the condition is severe, you do not really have to seek the help of a dermatologist as there are natural and commercial remedies that you can use against this condition.

Natural Remedies for Rosacea

– Potato Juice: take one tablespoon extracted potato juice and add one tablespoon of fuller’s earth into it. Mix both ingredients until a paste is formed. Apply the paste on the skin and leave it on for at least 5 to 10 minutes or until it dries out. This solution is referred to as potato mask, which is effective against spotty skin. This mask works by cleansing the skin thoroughly and removing rosacea.

– Sulfur Powder: simply prepare a paste that includes one teaspoon sulfur powder, two tablespoons fuller’s earth, bottled water and one beaten egg. Mix all ingredients properly and apply it onto your face as mask. This is helpful if you are suffering from rosacea, as it can cleanse the skin deeply however, make sure that you do not have any allergic reactions against sulfur. To determine this, try using the paste on the back of your hand first or the inner side of your elbow and see your skin’s reaction towards it. If there are no negative reactions then you can go ahead and use this to cure your rosacea problem.

– Tomatoes: prepare your own tomato paste using four medium-sized tomatoes, one teaspoon clear honey and a cup of finely ground oatmeal. Separate the liquid parts of the tomato from the solid ones before mixing all ingredients. When done, mix all ingredients properly until you come up with a paste. Apply it all over your face and leave it on for at least 10 minutes before washing it off with warm water. This paste is helpful not just for curing rosacea but for clearing blackheads as well.

– Oatmeal and Yogurt: you can prepare a thick paste by simply mixing yogurt and oatmeal. Apply the paste on the affected areas of your skin and let it dry. Adding fruit, vegetables or herb extracts to the paste can make it even more effective and this mixture is suitable for all skin types.

– Plums: boil at least 250 grams of plums and mash it. Add a teaspoon of almond oil into it and allow it to cool down. Apply it onto your face to clear acne and rosacea. This mixture is also effective against other facial skin problems.

Commercial Remedies for Rosacea

If you are too busy to make preparations for facial masks or home remedies for rosacea, you can also opt for OTC or prescription creams that can help you eliminate the condition. Some of the most recommended creams for rosacea include the following:

– Metronidazole also known as Noritate or Metrogel is a topical antibiotic that can be used for the effective treatment of rosacea. However, how this cream works against the problem is still unknown. Metronidazole cream can be used when prescribed by a specialist. This cream is helpful in reducing the redness and swelling of the face, as well as the lesions due to rosacea. The cream can be used by rubbing it directly to the affected area of the face at least once a day. However, avoid the excessive use of antibiotics, as it could cause the bacteria to become resistant to it. This means this remedy should only be used for a limited period of time. In case resistance occurs, another type of antibiotic may be prescribed as a substitute.

– Erythromycin antibiotics are also effective against rosacea. This rosacea cream is sold under different brand names including Erygel, Erymax, T-Stat, Staticin and Eryderm. The side effects of this cream are rare but when it occurs, it usually includes peeling or dry skin, redness on the affected area, and burning and tingling sensation. If you are allergic to any type of erythromycin, it would be best to avoid using this product and opt for another cream against rosacea.

– Clindamycin: this is being sold under Cleocin as its brand name. Although effective against rosacea, this comes with side effects like dryness or peeling, hives and rash. With clindamycin, the symptoms of rosacea are relieved after three to four weeks.

– Cetaphil: this is an OTC moisturizer that is helpful in reducing the symptoms of the condition. However, this should be used together with other rosacea creams.

– Azelaic Acid: this facial cream against rosacea contains rye, wheat and barley. Azelaic acid works by encouraging the skin to renew while killing the bacteria that causes skin blemishes and rosacea. However, take note that this cream can only be obtained when prescribed. Also, this remedy should be used twice daily, once in the morning and once at night.

– Cortisone: this is a prescribed facial cream which is helpful in diminishing the redness of the skin due to rosacea. However, if cortisone is used improperly, this can cause thinking of the skin so make sure that you follow the directions of your dermatologist when using this as treatment for the condition.

– Tretinoin: this is usually prescribed for stubborn cases of the condition or if antibiotics cannot provide relief. Tretinoin is a known vitamin A derivative, which is helpful against various skin problems like wrinkles and acne.

– Sunscreen: this is necessary when suffering from the condition and make sure that the sunscreen that you would opt for contains SPF 15 or higher. Sunscreen should be applied on the face regularly in order to protect it from the harmful rays of the sun that can aggravate the condition. In case the use of sunscreen cause stinging, using sun block with zinc oxide or titanium is recommended.

Apart from all these natural and commercial remedies against rosacea, lifestyle changes are also necessary to prevent he condition from recurring. Proper diet should also be followed for the total cure of the problem. A rosacea diet should exclude spicy foods, chocolate and alcoholic drinks, as these food products can worsen the condition.
